Hair loss affects a great number of people throughout the world to both male and female. The loss of hair can be a devastating experience for a lot of people, especially in this very fashion conscious world that we live in today. One form of hair loss that affects both men and women is Alopecia Areata.
Alopecia Areata is a common form of hair loss and it usually signified with small round patches on the scalp. Some people may suffer from a severe case which is called Alopecia Totalis where the scalp is totally bald. However, there is also Alopecia Universalis where the person loses all of their body and scalp hair.

It has been stated that around 2% of the population of America suffers from Alopecia Areata. It affects both male and female and most cases are found in young people and children. It is actually thought that the cause of alopecia areata is where the immune system attacks the hair follicle. However, it is not contagious, although, it does seem to be hereditary.
The condition generally starts with the hair falling out in small round patches and will continue until there are a few patches on the scalp. Although, as mentioned earlier, there is a more severe case called Alopecia Universalis which affects around 1% of the population and they can lose all of their hair on their scalp, body, eyebrows, hands and feet. There is no cure for this condition and the only hope is to try and find products that will aid the hair to regrow.
A great number of people ask the question how is alopecia areata going to affect my life? This is especially asked by the younger generation who are afflicted by this condition. One of the comforting things about this condition is that it is not painful and does not make people physically sick. It should be remembered it has no affect on life expectancy and it should not stop the sufferer from achieving their life goals, dreams and doing anything that a person without the condition can do.
However, this Hair loss condition can have be hard to deal with, especially from an emotional aspect. Many of the suffers join support groups where others with the same condition can express the hopes, fears and how they deal with the condition on a day to day basis. This can be very reassuring for other hair loss suffers as they begin to understand that they are not alone and there are others who also understand what they are going through. Other sufferers will research the condition to try and educate themselves into all aspects of the disease.
